OptiClean Sustainable Optics Initiative

On a mission to clean up the eyewear industry.

Climate change is threatening the future of our planet.

By working together, with everyone of us making small changes to our lives and making better, more responsible decisions, we can make a difference.

Helping you make environmentally friendly choices.

Our mission is to clean up the eyewear industry from within, by partnering with opticians across the UK and helping you to make environmentally friendly choices when it comes to your glasses, contact lenses and which opticians you use.

Opticlean is a new sustainability initiative for the optical industry.

Every day, opticians in the UK throw away a huge number of plastic ‘dummy lenses–the plain lenses which are in frames when you try them on. In fact, conservative estimates show that in 2019 alone, over 30tonnes of these lenses were discarded.

We couldn’t find a simple way to recycle these lenses, so we decided to be the change we wanted to see and Opticlean was born.

Our member practices will now be able to send their waste dummy lenses to us for sorting and storage. We need to accumulate over 80,000 lenses before we can take them for recycling at a plastic processing facility in Wiltshire

As the lenses are processed, they are turned into chips or pellets which can then be repurposed and put to good use, rather than being sent to landfill.

We want to make it easy for you to choose a sustainable optician, make greener eyewear choices and contribute to our mission to reduce our industry’s environmental impact.
